At Safe Haven, we know that ADHD is about more than just focus struggles or being “busy.” For many kids, there’s a deeper layer tied to how the brain and body are communicating—especially when it comes to eye movement, visual tracking, and brain coordination. That’s where our unique combination of low-level laser therapy and vision therapy comes in. Together, they help us support the brain in a more complete and lasting way.
You might not think to connect vision issues with ADHD, but we see it all the time. Many of the kids we support have trouble with eye tracking—where one eye may drift, vision seems jumpy or doubled, or they get easily fatigued when trying to read or focus.
This isn’t a matter of needing glasses. It’s a matter of how the brain is organizing and coordinating movement. One of the key players here is the cerebellum—the part of the brain that’s responsible for balance, posture, and also eye movement control. When there’s not enough neurological energy in this area, it can show up as eye movement dysfunction, poor coordination, or even emotional dysregulation.
That’s why we start with a detailed functional neurological exam. We’re not just looking at behavior—we’re looking at the systems that influence it.
One of the tools we use at Safe Haven to support these kids is low-level laser therapy (also called cold laser). We don’t apply the laser to the eyes directly. Instead, we focus on stimulating the parts of the brain that help the eyes move together smoothly—especially the cerebellum and brainstem.
A simple test like the Brock string helps us see how well the eyes are working together. In kids with ocular dysfunction, one eye often drifts, which can lead to blurred or doubled vision. But after just a few minutes of laser therapy, we often see significant changes: the eyes start to align and track together, leading to clearer vision and less visual strain.
We like to explain it this way: imagine two spotlights trying to shine on a dancer. If one spotlight drifts off, the picture becomes confusing. But when both lights (eyes) are focused together, the brain receives one clear, calm image—and that translates into better focus, more regulation, and less overwhelm.
Laser therapy lays the foundation—but we don’t stop there. For true change, vision therapy and laser therapy work hand in hand.
While your child is doing vision therapy—working on convergence, tracking, or strengthening visual focus—we’re complementing those exercises with laser therapy to support the brain’s capacity to learn and integrate that work.
This pairing matters. If a child is doing vision exercises without first addressing the neurological energy deficit, progress can be slow or inconsistent. But when we energize the brain with laser therapy while reinforcing new patterns through vision therapy, the improvements stick. The eyes start working as a team, the brain doesn’t have to work as hard, and your child feels calmer, more focused, and more in control.
Over the course of care, the results speak for themselves. We’ve had kids go from constantly shifting their eyes and struggling to read, to calmly tracking lines of text and keeping their place. Their parents notice more than better vision—they notice less fidgeting, fewer meltdowns, and more confidence. When eye coordination improves, the brain has more space and energy to focus on what really matters—connecting, learning, and growing.
At Safe Haven we are supporting the whole child in Loudoun County, we take a whole-child approach to ADHD care. We don’t believe in quick fixes or one-size-fits-all strategies. Instead, we dig deep to uncover how your child’s nervous system is wired and what’s getting in the way of their potential. Whether your child is struggling with ADHD, emotional overwhelm, or coordination challenges, we’re here to support their development from the inside out. Our goal is to help every child feel clear, calm, and confident in their body and brain.
